Spay, Neuter & Surgery

Skilled hands. Safe procedures. Faster recovery.

Surgery is often the most anxiety-inducing part of pet ownership — for you and your animal. Our goal is to make the experience as safe, transparent, and comfortable as possible, from the pre-operative consultation through to the final suture check.

Veterinary surgical suite at The Animal Doctor

Our surgical suite is equipped with modern anaesthetic monitoring (pulse oximetry, capnography, ECG, blood pressure), heated surgery tables to maintain body temperature, and a dedicated recovery ward where your pet wakes up under the watch of a trained veterinary nurse.

Spaying and neutering are among the most common procedures we perform. Beyond preventing unwanted litters, sterilisation significantly reduces the risk of mammary tumours, pyometra (a life-threatening uterine infection), testicular cancer, and roaming-related injuries. We recommend spaying or neutering most pets between 6 and 12 months of age.

We also perform a wide range of soft-tissue surgeries — mass and tumour removals, wound repairs, abscess drainage, foreign-body extractions (yes, dogs really do swallow socks), bladder-stone removal, and eye surgeries. Every surgical patient receives a thorough pre-operative blood screen, a tailored anaesthetic plan, multi-modal pain management, and a clear take-home recovery guide.

Why choose us for spay, neuter & surgery

Continuous vital monitoring

Heart rate, oxygen saturation, CO₂, blood pressure, and temperature are tracked every minute throughout surgery.

Pre-surgical blood screening

Every surgical patient gets blood work to ensure kidneys, liver, and blood cells can handle anaesthesia safely.

Heated surgery tables

Maintaining core body temperature during surgery reduces complications and speeds up recovery.

Multi-modal pain management

We combine local anaesthesia, systemic painkillers, and anti-inflammatories so your pet wakes up comfortable.

Supervised recovery ward

A calm, warm, nurse-monitored space where your pet recovers before going home with you.

Clear post-op guidance

A printed recovery plan, medication schedule, wound-care instructions, and a free follow-up suture check.

Frequently asked questions

What age should I spay or neuter my pet?
We generally recommend between 6 and 12 months, but the ideal timing depends on breed, size, and health. Large-breed dogs may benefit from waiting slightly longer. We'll advise during your consultation.
Is anaesthesia safe for my pet?
Modern veterinary anaesthesia is very safe. We run pre-surgical blood work to check organ function, use the safest available drug protocols, and monitor vital signs continuously throughout. Serious complications are rare.
How long is the recovery?
Most spay/neuter patients are back to normal activity within 10–14 days. More complex surgeries vary — we'll give you a specific timeline. Restricted activity and an e-collar are usually needed to protect the wound.
Can I visit my pet during recovery?
We find that pets recover fastest in a calm, quiet environment, so we don't allow in-ward visits. However, we'll call you with updates and send a photo when they're awake and comfortable.
What if there's an emergency during surgery?
We have emergency drugs, oxygen, and resuscitation equipment at the surgical table at all times. Our team is trained in veterinary CPR. We'll always call you immediately if anything unexpected arises.
